Work to protect archaeological sites during the Dakar 2019 has begun.
Specialists make the route tour to be held on January 2019, as this event is going to be 100 % Peruvian and will have a distance of 5,000 kilometers, with 70 % of the route on sand and dunes in the south of the country.
The organization said that 30 archaeological sites have been discovered since the beginning of the reconnaissance and they will be protected. Adding that the rally “will not pass through these areas.”
Even Patricia Balbuena, The Minister of Culture, said that her sector works to ensure that the next edition of the Dakar 2019 will not cause damage to the national heritage.
The preservation model will be the same as the one used in 2018, when the Dakar spent five days in coastal towns of Pisco, Ica and Arequipa. She also added that signage work and identification of archaeological site is on the agenda to do this last months previous the event. Even the use of drones has also been considered to make aerial photographs and verify if there is any type of risk in the archaeological and heritage zones.
This year the Ministry of Culture implemented a system which consisted of the formation of special brigades that followed the deployment of the “rally”, and at the same time they elaborated archaeological maps.
In order to minimize the contamination effects of these event, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) also participate in the works.
The contribution of the MINAM will be to achieve an adequate management of the solid waste, guaranteeing the protection of the natural areas, and compensating the emissions.

In this regard, the Minister of the Environment, Fabiola Muñoz, said that
“The generated emissions will be offset by a hundred percent, and that is compensated by contributing to the natural protected areas in the country, with waste management,” he explained.
