Peruvian potato vodka wins gold medal in London

Peruvian potato-based vodka, 14 Inkas, grabbed gold in the micro-distillery category of Vodka Masters 2018, Production Ministry’s (Produce) Innovate Peru informed.

14 Inkas is the world’s first vodka made from native potatoes.

The competition was organized by The Spirit Business magazine in London, England. This innovative vodka variation is produced by Destileria Espiritu Andino company, which is co-financed by and receives technical advice from Produce’s Innovate Peru program.

The annual event recognizes the quality of distilleries across the globe in diverse categories such as Super-Premium, Ultra-Premium, Organic, Standard, Micro-Distillery, Vodka Base– Wheat, Vodka Base–Fruit, Vodka Base–Corn, among others.

It should be noted 14 Inkas grabbed another gold medal at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition this year.

Native potatoes’ diversity

This high-quality spirit is made of organically certified native potatoes grown by small-scale producers from Peru’s high-Andean areas.

“Our vodka is unique in the world. We should be proud we have more than 3,000 types of native potatoes in our nation,” Destileria Espiritu Andino General Manager Omar Cosio expressed.

Furthermore, he expects to strengthen the product’s position in Latin American countries —such as Colombia and Chile— and conquer the most demanding markets like the United States and Europe.
