Technical teams from six South American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru), gathered in Cusco region, pursue consensual responses to natural disasters in Qhapaq Ñan Andean Road System in order to protect.

This site is an extensive Inca communication, trade and defense network of roads covering 30,000 km. It was constructed by the Incas over several centuries and is partly based on pre-Inca infrastructure.

During the International Workshop for Qhapaq Ñan, the experts assess the document on standardization in preparation, response, and recovery phases of the road in case of natural disasters.

The aim of the event is to develop effective responses to UNESCO’ World Heritage Committee’s recommendations.

Each member state is represented by four technical secretaries and experts on risk management.

“This is an amazing opportunity to make progress on the task of protecting the world heritage. It involves six countries that five centuries ago used to be united and articulated through this impressive road network,” Cusco Culture Director Luis Nieto expressed.

The event started with a keynote lecture presided by Icomos-Icorp Vice-Chair Christopher Marrion, followed by a representative from each member country.

Qhapaq Ñan Cusco’s headquarters shared details of its progress and presented an app to manage disaster risks along the Inca road.

As is known, Qhapaq Ñan was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List on June 21, 2014.
