The traditional Ayacucho RETABLO was declared a national cultural heritage, reflecting the tradition of master craftsmen in the realization of Andean births with unique finishes.
The altarpieces trace their origin to colonial times, when the Spanish priests traveled through the Andes to evangelize the Peruvian cities. In all that process they carried boxes articulated with images of different Catholic saints to let them know the population.
The boxes had the name of “Boxes of San Marcos” and they were of great reference by the Peruvian artisans for the creation of the altarpieces.
The manufacture of these pieces of art dates back to the 40’s when the boxes of San Marcos were used as reference for the design of traditional scenes such as traditional dances, parties, rural scenes as well as the work of planting and harvesting of the dedicated inhabitants. to the crop.
The Ayacucho artisans adapted the new boxes and made them in their own way, changing the name to Retablos. To do this job you just need to have a lot of patience, a lot of creativity and detail, because when creating these unique pieces of art the artisans are also telling us the stories they have lived.
A special place where we can appreciate in detail the techniques and attributes of the altarpieces and how the artisans have preserved the realization of these over time is the town of Quinoa, a small town 37 km outside of the city of Huamanga, is considered the Capital of the altarpiece artists and the destination captivates so much that when visiting it you will be amazed of the experience while you observe the process and the accomplishment of our Peruvian altarpieces.
