The 2026 whale-watching season begins in northern Peru
The regions of Tumbes and Piura are kicking off the 2026 whale-watching season, one of the most important tourist activities in northern Peru. The official launch took place at the Zorritos beach resort, from where various boats depart to observe the humpback whales that arrive each year in the warm waters off the Peruvian coast to breed and raise their calves.
The season will run from July through October, during which thousands of domestic and international visitors will be able to enjoy this experience at destinations such as Zorritos and Los Órganos, where authorized tour operators adhere to safety and conservation protocols to protect the species and its habitat.
In addition to promoting nature tourism, this activity benefits hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and local communities involved in the tourism service chain. Whale watching has become one of the main attractions of the high season on the country’s northern coast.
In July, PROMPERÚ and Y tú qué planes held seminars and training sessions aimed primarily at travel agencies, with the goal of boosting the promotion of this experience as part of the tourism product portfolio.
Authorities expect a significant influx of tourists in the coming months, solidifying this activity as a driver of the regional economy and an opportunity to continue promoting sustainable tourism in Peru.
