LIMA – JAUJA – TARMA – LA MERCED

Breakfast in the hotel.
With a very early morning departure to the city of La Merced, with a brief stop in route for breakfast in a touristic restaurant in the village of San Mateo. Then continuing on the Central Highway towards Jauja, along the way you’ll be able to enjoy the Mantaro Valley, which is a major supplier of key agricultural products (beans, peas, corn, oca, olluco, potatoes, wheat, yucca/cassava, onions, etc.) as well as dairy product from the grand capital city of Lima. Continuing on to the city of Tarma to enjoy a delicious lunch in a lovely touristic restaurant. A visit to Tarmatambo, a typical Andean town at 3,416 masl, just 7 kilometers from the city of Tarma, the place still retains its original pre-Hispanic characteristics. You will visit the extensive irrigated terraces by the natural springs of Huachac and Wuaylara, which the people still use today as an integral part of their daily agricultural practices. The scheduled arrival time to La Merced is 19:00 hours, after which you will enjoy an exquisite dinner at the San Jose farm.

LA MERCED – VILLA RICA – LA MERCED

Breakfast in the hotel.
08:30 hours departure to Villa Rica to visit the Native Yánesha Ñagazu Community. Which currently has about 90 families and a total of some 450 people principally dedicated to agriculture, especially the production of coffee with the help of the NGO (Non – governmental Organization) Ecoselva and the Coffee export company Volcafe which provides special roasts to the famous Italian coffee brand Lavazza for its special “Tierra” line of coffee, with the prestigious Rainforest Alliance Certified seal, exporting an average of 600 quintals (132,277 pounds) of pergamino coffee since 2005.

After which we will visit Villa Rica Highland, a private company formed by ten partners, made up of both producers and exporters of the highest quality of coffee, with a business vision focused on increasing productivity, improving quality, and expanding existing markets. In this place you will get to see the quality control coffee laboratory and the processing plant, where the golden beans of green coffee are selected and processed for exportation. At 13:30 hours we will have lunch in Villa Rica.
Continuing on our way to visit the Santa Rosa Farm, built in 1927 by Austrian and German immigrants where you can witness the traditional method of coffee cultivation in the area. You will also be able to appreciate the still maintained lifestyle of the first Austro – German colonists that arrived in Villa Rica.
Dinner and overnight at the San Jose farm.

LA MERCED – HUASAHUASI – LA MERCED

Breakfast in the hotel. At 07:30 hours we will leave for the town of Huasahuasi (2,751 masl), which sits on an ancient dry lake, with rich moist soil that favors the production of tubers and root crops, it is known as the number 1 producer of the potato in all of Peru. You will get to see the highest altitude zones of planting, where you will interact with the farmers of the area to better understand their way of life, the difficulties and achievements. As well as seeing the production of cattle, sheep, goats and horses. During the tour you can participate in a tasting allowing you to sample your way through the vast variety of potatoes from the region, as well as the local vegetables and cheeses produced here in and around Huasahuasi. Time for lunch (included). You will visit the fields closest to these areas, where you will appreciate the crops of potatoes and vegetables such as beans, olluco and onions. Return to La Merced. Dinner and lodging at the San Jose farm.

LA MERCED – ACOBAMBA – SAN PEDRO DE CAJAS – LA MERCED

Breakfast in the hotel. At 08:30 hours we leave for the city of Acobamba where we’ll see some more potato crops as well as legumes and flowers. Then we will visit the farming community of San Pedro de Cajas, where all the inhabitants dedicate themselves to the planting of potatoes, and rearing of sheep and alpaca, including caring for wild herds of vicuña. 90% of the populations are dedicated to the artisanal loom as a second activity. Hand-crafting carpets, authentic blankets, jackets and scarves made from the wool of alpacas, sheep, and vicuñas. You will also have the opportunity to visit an artisanal workshop. As well as view the planting of maca, the marvelous and most natural energizer, and appreciate some of the 3,000 varieties of potatoes that are native to Peru. At 13:30 hours we will have lunch in a restaurant in San Pedro de Cajas and at 16:00 hours we will continue on our way to visit the Parpacocha Lagoon where wild herds of vicuñas roam freely. Here, on June 24th, they perform the traditional sheering of the vicuña. Finally, we return to La Merced. Dinner. Overnight at the San Jose farm. (B, L, D)

LA MERCED – SAN JOSE ECOLOGICAL PARK – LA MERCED – LIMA

Breakfast in the hotel. 08:30 hours we leave for the San José Ecological Park, where you will learn about the natural and cultural heritage of the central highlands, and view the citrus and other highland fruit plantations. You’ll enter the vast forest made of giant mahoganies, gingers, bolarinas, heliconias, and many other diverse wild and ornamental florae. Followed by learning about and participating in the Plant a Tree in Chanchamayo forest restoration program, and receive a certificate after you have planted your tree. After which we’ll return to La Merced. And then when all ready, we head back to Lima, with lunch along the way at the well – known “Chez Vitor” restaurant in San Mateo. Arriving in Lima around 19:00 hours.

LIMA – CUSCO – SACRED VALLEY 

Breakfast in the hotel. At the pre – advised time we will head out to the Jorge Chavez International airport to board the plane bound Cusco. Upon arrival you’ll be greeted and taken in private transport to your hotel located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We’ll visit the town of Pisac along the way, and take a little trip to the picturesque artisanal market, where to this day the people still practice the barter and exchange form of shopping for their food or other goods just as their ancestors did throughout history. Continuing on our way with a stop for lunch at a touristic restaurant. Later we will go to the town of Ollantaytambo, and visit the beautiful fortress giving birth to the town’s name. Here you’ll tour the most important sectors while the guide gives you a history of the site. Finally, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

SACRED VALLEY – HUILLOC COMMUNITY – SACRED VALLEY

Breakfast in the hotel. 8:30 am we leave for the Huilloc community, situated in the district of Ollantaytambo, where you’ll get to participate in the “Kusi Runa” activity. Where you can experience the daily in the life of a Huilloc community member, participating in the agricultural work on the field work on the farm. Symbolically, you can be an integral part of the community and truly experience their way of life and the daily routine of an Andean farmer (generally speaking). As a community member you’ll wear the typical poncho of Huilloc and use the traditional tools they use during their work. The men do agricultural work, while the women perform the cooking. Ending the whole experience by participating in the unforgettable ritual celebrations, accompanied by music and local dance. Followed by an authentic lunch with the community members. Return to your hotel in the Sacred Valley. Overnight. (B, L)

SACRED VALLEY – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO 

Breakfast in the hotel. Very early we’ll part for the Ollanta train station to take our train to the majestic city of Aguas Calientes, the trip will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes, along the way you’ll be able to appreciate the lush natural landscapes that change according to the existing altitude. Arriving at the town’s station we’ll take a bus up to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. At 10:00 am the visit to the citadel will start with the magnificent landscape that surrounds it. The total tour will last about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and will end with our descent by bus back to the town of Aguas Calientes, where do some shopping and have lunch. At the specified time we’ll board the train back to Ollanta, from there we’ll be driven back to Cusco.

CUSCO – LIMA / … 

Breakfast in the hotel. The morning you’ll be free to walk around the city sightseeing or shopping. At the indicated hour you’ll be taken to the airport in order to board your flight back to the capital of Lima. Upon arrival in Lima you’ll be greeted and assisted on to your connecting international flight. (B)
