Peru will lead agro-exports in nine products in 2023
AGAP estimates that agro-exports will reach their peak next year and reach US$ 11,554 million. Shipments of Peruvian fruit and vegetables will reach US$ 10,000 million in 2022 …
Between January and May 2020, Peruvian fruit exports totaled US$1.414 billion, a figure 11.6% higher than that registered during the same period in 2019, thus setting a new historical record for this period, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism reported on Thursday.
“Despite the difficult situation generated by COVID-19, we have not stopped exporting fruits to the main international markets. This is due to the world’s demand for food, the implementation of agreements, and the efforts of the Peruvian business community to promote the entry of our exportable offer into those markets,” said Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Sayuri Bayona.
The official added that Peru’s goal is to become one of the world’s top 10 fruit exporters and the third-largest in Latin America. Currently, the Inca country is among the top 15 in the world and the fourth-largest in Latin America.
The government official pointed out that —as of May 2020— the increase in fruit shipments was explained by higher grape sales (US$451 million), denoting a growth of 26.5% —followed by mangoes (US$329 million, +26.8%), and avocadoes (US$328 million, +7.1%).
Special attention deserved the increase in citrus exports (US$62 million, +41%), mainly of tangerines (US$54 million, +50%). The greater sales of this product were due to higher supply and demand.
The main destinations for Peruvian fruits are the United States (40%) and the European Union (38%). Sales to these destinations increased 8% and 18%, respectively.
The dynamism of fruit shipments contributed to the positive evolution of non-traditional agro-exports, whose sales totaled US$2.308 billion (+2.8%) in the first five months of 2020.
