The resumption of tours through Inca Trail Route 5 will be at the same time of the reopening of Machu Picchu —Peru’s premier tourist attraction and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World— starting July 1, the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) of Cusco has announced.
According to DDC-Cusco, a maximum of 120 (domestic or foreign) tourists per day will be allowed to embark on this route during the first stage of reopening.
Visitors must travel in groups of 8 and will be urged to keep social distancing of at least two meters, as stipulated by the health protocol.
The Route 5 circuit starts in Chachabamba by Km 104 of Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu railway.
Along the route, visitors can find the Chachabamba archaeological site, the Sacred Trail, the Wiñayawayna and Intipunku pre-Hispanic monuments, and the Historic Sanctuary and Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu.
It must be noted that the whole tour consists of a 4-6-hour hike.
As is known, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu will reopen to tourists on July 1 offering free admission for children, teenagers, and seniors coming from Peru or abroad, as well as public servants.
Visitors must adhere to the safety protocols and guidelines set by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
According to Cusco Region Governor Jean Paul Benavente, the Inca citadel will merely welcome a total of 675 visitors per day; that means 75 per hour —including tourist guides.
