Inti Raymi “The Sun Festival” in Peru

This name may seem difficult to pronounce: “Inti Raymi” in Quechua, the language of the Incas means “Festival of the Sun” and it is the most important religious celebration by the Incas to celebrate the time of the southern winter solstice.

It is celebrated in Cuzco (Peru) on June 24th of every year in honor of the god “Inti or Sun”. At the time of flourishing of this civilization, the lavish celebrations lasted about 15 days, with sacrifices and purification rituals. The last celebration before the Inca was in 1535. The ceremonies and festivities were considered sacrilegious by the Spaniards, and in 1572 they were prohibited by Viceroy Toledo. But this only increased the faith and they continued to be celebrated secretly by the population until today.

Today the main ceremony and the most sumptuous part of the celebration is the moment when the representatives of the four suyos arrive in Cusco, bringing reports and offerings to the Inca. A moment of worship to the sun and also of spiritual renewal and harmony with mother earth.

This year that Peru also celebrates the bicentennial of its independence, the great festival of the sun will take place on Thursday, June 24, in the three spiritual spaces; the temple Qoricancha, the Plaza de Armas of Cusco and in the plains in front of the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Complex, with the due biosecurity protocols and without public.

According to the Ministry of Culture, although the version will be reduced in terms of the number of people who will perform the staging, it will try to maintain its symbolic character. The event will be broadcasted nationally and worldwide, through TV Peru and the Ministry of Culture’s social networks.
