The discovery and study of the Nazca lines always lead us to the name of María Reiche, a German nationalized Peruvian researcher. She dedicated her life to the study and preservation of the famous lines.
On May 15 a mass was celebrated in memory of Maria Reiche in the Mother Church of Nazca church. At the end of the ceremony, the national pavilion was raised and then a pilgrimage to the mausoleum called “Dama de las Pampas”.
However, these were not the only activities that were carried out on Maria Reiche, since the citizens of Nazca always have her present and in her honor they dedicate the Tourist Week of the province date that coincides with the birth of the German scientist.
Today, we can recall that the German mathematician Maria Reiche left a great heritage in the conservation and study of these enigmatic figures in the Ica region.
The Nazca lines are detailed drawings and lines with geometric and zoomorphic shapes that extend across the Pampas of Jumana, in an area that covers 50 kilometers in length and 15 kilometers in width, located between kilometers 419 and 465 of the Pan-American Highway.
Composed of several hundred figures ranging from simple designs to complex figures. Regarding its use, María Reiche considered that they were used by the ancient Peruvian astronomers as a gigantic solar and lunar calendar.
Reiche was born on May 15, 1903 and arrived in Peru at the age of 29 to work as a governess to the son of the German consul in Cusco after applying for this job.
In 1936 he returned to his country and a year later, at the end of 1937, he returned to Peru. The beauty of the Andean landscapes had captivated her in such a way that she decided to stay in the country.
