Peru —as a country— won four awards in the South American edition of the World Travel Awards 2020, thus remaining a favorite among travelers visiting the region, Peru’s Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) reported on Thursday.
This international competition —heralded by many as the “Oscars of the travel industry— named Machu Picchu as South America’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2020.
As is known, the emblematic Inca citadel has recently reopened its doors to national and foreign tourists after being closed for almost eight months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, it was awarded the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp, known as “Safe Travels.”
Additionally, Peru won three additional accolades: South America’s Leading Cultural Destination 2020, South America’s Leading Green Destination 2020, and South America’s Leading Cruise Destination 2020.
The winners were announced on the Latin America Winners Day, an event that —unlike previous years— was held virtually.
