Peru takes second place worldwide in Global Big Day 2025
Peru has reaffirmed its position as one of the world’s leading birdwatching powers by taking second place in Global Big Day 2025, the most important citizen science event for this category. During the 10 May event, Peruvian birders recorded 1,358 bird species in a single day, behind only Colombia, which led with 1,497 species.
Approximately 1,000 birders actively participated throughout the country, contributing more than 4,500 bird lists through the eBird platform. The regions of Cusco and Loreto stood out especially, with 635 and 563 species recorded respectively.
The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) has actively promoted birdwatching as a regional development strategy. Global Big Day not only highlights Peru’s biodiversity, but also promotes birdwatching, a growing sector that promotes sustainable development and environmental awareness. Future editions will motivate this target audience to visit more regions, mainly the Natural Areas of the Peruvian Amazon.
This achievement positions Peru as one of the most important birding destinations worldwide, demonstrating the commitment of its citizens and authorities to the conservation of its rich birdlife. The country continues to consolidate its leadership in biodiversity and nature tourism, positioning itself as a reference in bird conservation at a global level.
