The best coffee in Peru 2020 comes from Cusco

The grain is of the Geisha variety, which is grown on the La Esperanza farm, located at 1,848 meters above sea level, and achieved 90 points in cup in the fourth edition of Taza de Excelencia Peru 2020.

Hilda Leguía Gonzales, from the district of Inkawasi, province of La Convención, Cusco, is the coffee farmer with the best coffee in the country. This was demonstrated in the fourth edition of Cup of Excellence Peru 2020, the recognized competition of specialty coffees that on this occasion was conducted virtually.

After a selection process, the producer won over another 36 coffee growers with a Geisha variety coffee grown on their La Esperanza farm, located at 1,848 meters above sea level, and which achieved 90 points in cup.

In second place was Edwar Toro Goicochea, from the province of Jaén, Cajamarca, with 89.58 points, while in third place was Jhonner Jhasson Chinguel Morales, from the province of San Ignacio, also in Cajamarca, with a coffee of 88.96 points.

List of the top 10 best coffees in the country: Fidel Huancas Huancas from San Ignacio, Cajamarca, with 88.92 points (fourth place); Norman Choque Ccuno from the province of Sandia, Puno, with 88.88 points (fifth place); Hernán Rodas Guerrero from Jaén, Cajamarca, with 88.77 points (sixth place)

In addition to Gino Sadler Marín Ciriaco from the province of Oxapampa, Pasco, with 88.77 points (seventh place); Eli Espinoza Soberón from Jaén, Cajamarca, with 88.73 points (eighth place); Valerio Almanza Ccahua from La Convención, Cusco, with 88.58 points (ninth place); Dwight Aguilar Masías from the province of Santa Teresa with 88.58 points (tenth place)

Of the total of 184 specialty coffee samples submitted to the competition, 36 coffees passed to the final stage and, in the context of Covid-19, were sent for final evaluation to eight laboratories located in Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, the United States, England and Norway. Of these 36 coffees, 24 were declared winners by obtaining 87 points or more.

The 24 winners of Cup of Excellence Peru 2020 will participate in an electronic auction to be held on December 3rd. The electronic auction involves international buyers bidding for the best coffees, offering high prices for them. For example, Juan Heredia Sanchez, winner of Cup of Excellence 2017, exceeded the price of US$ 10,000 per quintal (45.36 kilograms). In total, Heredia managed to sell 328 kg of green coffee for over US$ 70,000.

. The announcement of the winners of Cup of Excellence Peru 2020 was made on Friday 30 October in a virtual ceremony held at the National Digital Platform for the Promotion of Coffee.
